When you become a Virtual Assistant, one of the first things you do is choose a name for yourself. Easy right? Nope! It’s not just you, choosing a name to represent you and your brand is incredibly hard. So I thought I’d write some tips that might help.
Brainstorm - who do you want to be working with? What services might you offer? What part of you do you want to get across in your brand name?
Bare in mind, this will stay with you - what are your ambitions? Where do you see your company going in the next few years? Do you want to grow and be working with a team or are you going to stick with working as you? Having a VA business with your brand name can be a great idea but if your plan is to expand and be an agency model in a few years time, your name as a brand won’t work so well.
Keep it simple - imagine meeting someone at a networking meeting and hitting it off. You give them your website details but the name is so long they’ve forgotten it within a couple of minutes. Keep it short, snappy and memorable.
Is anyone else using your name? Once you have a few ideas, do a few searches. Is there anyone using the name already as a domain, on social media etc. And most importantly, make sure it’s not trademarked or copyrighted. If there is someone with a similar name, move on. Don’t choose a website with theamazingva.me/.net/.ca - people won’t remember it and your competitor is more likely to get the hits. They’re also more likely to trademark it. Be individual and unique!
Consider your brand and ask other’s opinions - how does your name sound when you say it out loud? Ask your friends too. If it sounds corporate and your ideal client is big companies - great! If your ideal client is a local small business who wants a friendly face, not so great.
These things aren’t always easy. Don’t expect to come up with a name at the drop of a hat. But it’ll be worth it when you decide on your perfect name and buy your web domain - I promise!
